Introduction

Healthcare professionals, public health advocates, community workers and NGO staff are under constant pressure to upskill, earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and prove compliance in areas like bioethics and epidemiology. Paid courses and university certificates add up quickly.

Two US agencies, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), publish free online training that anyone in the world can access. But the landscape has changed, and a lot of older guides (including an earlier version of this one) point to courses that no longer exist.

This guide covers what is genuinely free and available in 2026, what has been retired, and how to describe these certificates honestly on your CV. It is part of our wider hub of US government free online courses with certificates.

The short version

  • CDC TRAIN is the main free platform for CDC public health courses, and many courses carry free CE credit.
  • NIH no longer offers its “Protecting Human Research Participants” course. It was retired in 2018. The free replacement most institutions accept is the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) training.
  • NIH still offers a free bioethics course, the Clinical Center’s “Ethical and Regulatory Aspects of Clinical Research”, but it runs on an annual schedule with enrolment windows.
  • A free certificate is not the same as an accredited qualification. Read the next section before you put any of these on a CV or a CPD log.

What these certificates are, and what they are not

Most of the courses below give you a certificate of completion. That proves you finished the training. It is not a degree, a licence or a professional registration.

Continuing education credit is a separate thing. It is only awarded for courses that are specifically accredited for CE, and whether your own regulator or employer accepts a US-issued credit is up to them. If you are a nurse, doctor or allied health professional in South Africa, check with your regulator (for example the HPCSA or SANC) before relying on any US CE credit for your CPD points. Do this first, because a free certificate that your regulator will not count is a nice extra, not a renewal solution.

For research ethics training, the same rule applies: your institution or ethics committee decides which training it accepts. Ask your IRB or research ethics committee before you start.

CDC TRAIN: free public health courses and CE credit

CDC TRAIN is a free online learning platform for public health and healthcare professionals, and it is part of the wider TRAIN Learning Network. It lists thousands of courses, including many developed by CDC experts, and offers free CE for many of them. CDC’s accredited courses can provide up to 10 types of CE, covering professions such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists and veterinarians.

One important update: CDC’s older Training and Continuing Education Online (TCEO) system has been retired. Courses and CE now run through CDC TRAIN, so older guides and bookmarks that point to TCEO will not work.

How to get a certificate on CDC TRAIN

  1. Create a free TRAIN account (or add CDC to your existing TRAIN profile).
  2. Search the catalogue and filter for courses that offer continuing education.
  3. Complete the course, then complete the CE process inside TRAIN. Finishing the lessons alone does not issue the CE certificate.
  4. Download your transcript or certificate from your TRAIN account and save a copy.

Good starting points

  • Public Health 101 Series. CDC’s introductory series covering the sciences essential to public health practice. It is aimed at people new to public health, educators and anyone considering a public health career. Check the individual module listing for certificate and CE details, as they can differ by module.
  • Epidemiology. CDC’s classic self-study course, Principles of Epidemiology in Public Health Practice, is free and covers surveillance, measures of risk, data display and outbreak investigation across six lessons. Be aware that CE availability for this course has changed over the years and some listings say CE is no longer offered, so confirm in TRAIN whether a certificate or CE is available before you count on it.
  • Outbreak and risk communication. Search TRAIN for crisis and emergency risk communication courses. Course titles and availability change, so use the catalogue search rather than relying on a title from an old article.

Why employers value it: For healthcare administrators, community health workers and NGO project coordinators, recognised CDC training signals structured knowledge of outbreak response and public health practice. It supports a CV, but it does not replace a qualification.

NIH: what changed with the human subjects training

If your work involves clinical research or human participants, you probably need research ethics training. Here is what you need to know in 2026.

The NIH “Protecting Human Research Participants” (PHRP) course is retired

NIH stopped offering the PHRP online course on 26 September 2018 and said it did not plan to provide an alternative. NIH still requires education in the protection of human subjects for investigators, but it leaves the choice of training to institutions and does not endorse a specific programme. Archived course content exists as a reference only, so it does not give you a new certificate. If you completed PHRP before the cut-off date, your institution’s policy decides whether that certificate is still accepted.

The free replacement most researchers use: OHRP Human Research Protection Foundational Training

The HHS Office for Human Research Protections offers free online Human Research Protection Foundational Training. It is a five-lesson course with a quiz at the end of each lesson and a certificate of completion for each one. HHS describes it as a way to meet the NIH educational requirement for investigators and key personnel.

  • Cost: free, self-paced
  • Typical lessons: when HHS regulations apply, what counts as human subjects research, what IRBs are, how IRBs review research, and participant-centred informed consent
  • Watch out: save all five certificates. OHRP does not track who completes the training and cannot reissue certificates. Some institutions also require renewal every few years.

OHRP also offers a free Participant-Centered Informed Consent Training (about 95 minutes), which is useful for NGO field researchers who design consent forms.

NIH Clinical Center bioethics course

The NIH Clinical Center’s Department of Bioethics runs Ethical and Regulatory Aspects of Clinical Research, which is open to anyone interested or involved in the ethics of clinical research with human subjects. An asynchronous online version is offered annually at no cost, with enrolment windows, so check the NIH page for the current dates. A course textbook is listed, so confirm whether it is optional or required for the format you choose. This course is a good fit for NGO staff and students who want depth in research ethics, but it is not a replacement for your institution’s mandatory human subjects training unless your ethics committee says so.

Correction note for returning readers: An earlier version of this article listed an “Introduction to NIH Bioethics” course and the NIH PHRP course. We could not verify the first under that name, and the second has been retired, so both have been replaced above.

How to list these certificates on your CV

List the actual issuing body, because recruiters and ethics committees check this. Do not write that NIH issued a certificate that HHS OHRP issued.

  • CDC example: Public Health 101 Series | Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), via CDC TRAIN | 2026
  • HHS example: Human Research Protection Foundational Training | HHS Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) | 2026
  • NIH example: Ethical and Regulatory Aspects of Clinical Research | NIH Clinical Center, Department of Bioethics | 2026

Put them in a “Certifications and training” section, label them as completion certificates, and keep the dates accurate. Useful keywords, where they genuinely match what you studied: epidemiology, public health practice, disease surveillance, human subjects protection, research ethics, informed consent, health communication. Applicant tracking systems read the full organisation name, so spell out “Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)” at least once.

Frequently asked questions

Are CDC and NIH courses really free for people outside the US? CDC TRAIN and the OHRP training are free to access online, and you do not need to be a US citizen. Whether CE credits are recognised in your country is a separate question for your regulator.

Will these certificates help me get a job? They support a CV, especially for entry-level and NGO roles, but they do not replace a degree or professional registration. Treat them as proof of initiative and specific knowledge.

Is the NIH human subjects certificate still available? Not from NIH. The NIH PHRP course was retired in 2018. Use the OHRP training or your institution’s required programme, and confirm with your ethics committee.

How often should I renew research ethics training? It depends on your institution. Many ask for renewal every few years, so check your own policy.

  • Build technical compliance skills with our guide to CISA Learning free government cybersecurity training.
  • See every public sector option in our master directory of US government free online courses with certificates.

Key takeaways

  • CDC TRAIN is the home of free CDC training. Many courses offer free CE, but you must complete the CE process in TRAIN to get the certificate.
  • The NIH PHRP course was retired in 2018. Use the free HHS OHRP Human Research Protection Foundational Training or your institution’s approved programme.
  • NIH’s Clinical Center bioethics course is free but scheduled. Check enrolment dates.
  • A completion certificate is not an accredited qualification. Confirm CE and ethics training acceptance with your regulator or ethics committee before you rely on it.
  • Credit the right issuer on your CV. CDC, HHS OHRP and NIH are different bodies.
