Understanding the YES Youth Program: Industries, Facilitators, and Certificate Value

Youth unemployment remains one of South Africa’s most urgent challenges. To tackle this issue, the South African government and private sector created the Youth Employment Service (YES) initiative. YES is a business-led non-profit program designed to give unemployed young people a foot in the door through 12 months of paid, quality work experience.

This guide breaks down how the YES program works, the key industries involved, how facilitators support candidates, and what a YES completion certificate really means for your career.

What is the YES Youth Program?

The YES program is a 12-month workplace initiative for unemployed black South Africans aged 18 to 35. Rather than acting as a standard classroom course, YES focuses on direct, on-the-job training. Candidates sign a one-year employment contract, receive a monthly stipend, and gain hands-on experience in a real workplace setting.

Young South Africans can access these work opportunities for free through the zero-rated SA Youth Portal, which matches job seekers with local placements without requiring internet data.

Key Industries Participating in YES

The YES program operates across multiple high-growth and essential sectors in South Africa:

  1. Information Technology and Digital Services: Candidates learn software support, digital marketing, data administration, and introductory coding.
  2. Green Energy and Sustainability: Placements cover solar installations, eco-friendly agriculture, and local environmental stewardship.
  3. Financial and Business Services: Roles include customer service support, administrative assistance, basic bookkeeping, and call center operations.
  4. Retail, Logistics, and Hospitality: Youth gain experience in store operations, stock management, supply chain coordination, and guest services.
  5. Health, Education, and Community Care: Placements support non-governmental organizations (NGOs), clinics, and community centers with administrative and frontline assistance.

Direct Hosting vs. Implementation Partners

Businesses participating in the YES initiative can choose between two main ways to host youth:

1. Direct Hosting

In direct hosting, the sponsoring company recruits candidates and places them inside its own offices or operational facilities. The company manages day-to-day work, provides direct mentorship, and handles internal payroll.

2. Implementation Partners (Turnkey Model)

Companies that do not have the physical capacity or internal resources to host candidates can use accredited Implementation Partners. These turnkey facilitators manage the entire operational lifecycle on behalf of the sponsor:

  • Recruitment and Selection: Finding eligible youth in local communities.
  • Workplace Placement: Placing youth in verified host sites like schools, community health organizations, or small enterprises.
  • Training and Development: Delivering soft skills training, digital literacy lessons, and workplace safety modules.
  • Payroll and Monitoring: Managing monthly stipend payouts, timesheets, and quarterly progress evaluations.

Understanding the YES Certificate and Its Career Value

Upon completing 12 months in the program, every participant receives an official YES Certificate of Completion.

What the YES Certificate Represents

  • 12 Months of Proven Work History: It acts as verified proof that you spent a full year in a structured workplace environment.
  • Workplace Readiness: It confirms that you have mastered basic workplace habits such as punctuality, communication, teamwork, and task management.
  • CV Transformation: It moves your CV out of the zero-experience bracket, which is often the biggest barrier for first-time job seekers.

How it Differs from a SETA Qualification

It is important to note the difference between a YES certificate and a SETA-accredited qualification:

  • A SETA Qualification (such as an NQF-level Learnership or National Certificate) focuses on formal academic assessments and theoretical framework training.
  • A YES Certificate is a practical work reference verifying real job experience and employment history.

While YES is focused on work experience rather than formal academic degrees, many host organizations and facilitators provide extra short courses or software badges alongside the main placement.

Why Businesses Invest in the YES Program

Companies sponsor YES candidates because the program offers clear strategic incentives:

Business ObjectiveBenefit Delivered by YES
B-BBEE Scorecard BoostSponsoring companies can move up 1 or 2 B-BBEE recognition levels by meeting target youth headcount thresholds.
ESG and Social ImpactProvides measurable, auditable data showing direct community investment and job creation for annual reporting.
Talent Pipeline CreationCompanies can evaluate young candidates for 12 months before offering permanent positions, reducing hiring risk.

How to Get Started

  • For Job Seekers: Build your free profile on SA Youth and keep your location details updated to receive notifications for placements in your area.
  • For Businesses: Visit the official YES4Youth Portal to calculate your target youth headcount and choose between direct hosting or partner implementation.

Would you like to expand any specific section, such as adding detailed advice for candidates preparing for their YES interviews?
